According to Foundation the months are named based on the season and the moon: Midwinters Moon, Ice Moon, Thawing Moon, Budding Moon, and Flowering Moon.
Mercedes Lackey has stated that New Years begins on the 1st day of the Midwinter Moon.
Using these names and a 30-day moon cycle, the following Calendar has been officially approved by Mercedes Lackey and can be used for reference.

- The Forst Reach metalsmith dies in poverty, leaving a wife and an embittered son. The wife dies soon after, and the boy Olias becomes a thief, using his meager Bardic and Herald Gifts. With his Bard Gift he coaxes traveling minstrel troupes to take him on, playing in towns and villages. When he steals, he protects his fellow minstrels from backlash by directing suspicion on someone local who can afford to be accused. He sometimes uses Thought-Sending to plant doubts.

One Hour Later
- Tylendel Frelennye is born. Tylendel and his twin brother, Staven, share a mental link.

- Olias is confronted while robbing a house, and sprains his ankle escaping. He and his horse run far into the night to evade pursuit. Just as he settles into a camp off the side of the road, he sees a horse approaching. A large boy is tied up in the saddle, and has obviously been brutally beaten, sliced, whipped, deliberately burned and half-scalped. Olias frees the boy, who speaks in a foreign language. Olias breaks his own ankle taking the boy down from the horse. The boy heals him and then heals his own wounds. He is mentally disabled and has trouble communicating. They share a meal.

- After History, Vanyel has a class on Religions (plural), which surprised him.

In that day’s class he learned of the "People of the One" who had settled about Crescent Lake.
- After Religions, Vanyel attends a class on Literature where, just before it began, he overhears Chadran and Breda discuss the fact that Vanyel does not have the Bardic Gift.

- After dinner, where Savil tells Vanyel that he does not have the Bardic Gift and cannot become even a minstrel, Vanyel decides to go to the Great Hall where all the young people gather for festivities.

While “in her cups” Breda tells Tylendel “there are times when the Gift gets in the way of the music” and that if Vanyel was not heir to Forst Reach, she would snatch him up for training.

- Wester Leshara is mentioned by Savil as she berates Tylendel in an effort to test his strength of will as suggested by Herald-Mage Jaysen, Seneschal and Chosen by Companion Felar.
- Wester Leshara is the head of the Leshara clan, blood enemies of the Frelennyes.

- Savil is finally returning from the Council session and discovers Tylendel is sleeping with Vanyel. After mind-speaking with Tylendel, Savil goes to sleep knowing that Vanyel, who had arrived a month before, will be okay now.

- Vanyel, Tylendel and Savil talk about how to keep Withen Ashkevron from finding out about Vanyel being shay’a’chern.

- After talking with Savil and Tylendel, Vanyel is about to head out to Companion’s Field when some of his female admirers come around the corner to speak with him. Their names are Jillian, Kertire, Jesalis, and Wendi whose sister, Ratha, was fostered with Lady Treesa, Vanyel’s mother.

- Vanyel meets Gala, Tylendel’s Companion. This is also the first time Vanyel meets a Companion.

- For just a moment, when looking at Companion Gala, Vanyel has “a disconcerting double vision image of the prancing Companion and an equally mischievous young woman of about Tylendel's age, laughing soundlessly”.
- Hypothesis: For a brief moment Vanyel’s Mage-Sight activates, allowing him to see what may have been Gala in her human form before she died and was reincarnated as a Companion.

The Next Day
Noon
- After playing for the girls as he had promised, Vanyel returns to his room with bleeding fingers and a cramped hand. He still has no feeling in some fingers from when his arm was broken.

- Tylendel calls Vanyel “ashke” for the first time and explains what it means: beloved. He tells Vanyel of how Savil had been trained in her abilities by a Tayledras Hawkbrother Adept named Starwind k’Treva who made her Wingsister.

A Week Later
- Savil notes that Tylenedel’s voice is more of a tenor and Vanyel’s voice is deeper.

- Tylendel tells Savil that he and Vanyel have been planning a moment when Tylendel will pretend to be insulted by all the backstabbing comments Vanyel has been making about him, and the two of them will get into a very public fight. The public feuding is to mislead Withen Ashkevron if any rumors reach him about their relationship.

- Savil notes that Vanyel is becoming dependent on Tylendel, but Tylendel thinks Vanyel will grow out of it.

A Fortnight Later
Afternoon
- Savil, Mardic and Donni are interrupted during mage practice by a member of the Guard telling them that Tylendel and Vanyel are fighting in the mud caused by a soaking rain.

- Savil confronts Tylendel and Vanyel who have been fighting, and berates them in front of a large crowd. Vanyel and Tylendel are both injured and sent back to their individual quarters to await further punishment.

- Vanyel has an affair with a guard while at the Karse Border War. It lasts two or three months.

- Gifted twins Milla and Orun are Chosen on their tenth birthday. As they journey towards Haven, they tell their Companions Sorcha and Torin that their foresight has shown them that they have two possible futures: service to Valdemar, or Darkness. The Darkness is systematically killing everyone with the “spark,” a gift they are about to manifest, "what the songs say Herald Vanyel does on the Karsite border.” The Companions recognize it as the mage-gift, and say the continuing deaths explain why there are fewer mages being found and chosen. They increase their speed towards Haven to notify the Circle.

Two Days Later
- While resting on the road, they are attacked by demons disguised as wyrsa, which savage Orun’s arm.

Three Days Later
- After recovering for a night at a Waystation, they sense a large attacker tracking them. They flee the road and enter the woods. Orun thinks they are tracking his wound, and they separate hoping that one of them will make it to Haven. Torin and Orun are killed, and when the monster catches up and wounds Milla, Sorcha sends her on ahead and defends their rear. Milla continues afoot, but Sorcha soon realizes the monster is too strong for her to defeat. Milla hears a loud noise behind her, and suddenly the forest is silent. She eventually reaches the road, and trudges on towards Haven. She passes out, and wakes when a tinker picks her up and treats her wounds. Milla is relieved and pours out her tale as he consoles her. Suddenly his tone of voice changes, and she realizes he is the Darkness. He kills her.
- Assumption: Sorcha has used a Final Strike to kill the monster, at the cost of her own life.

Late in the Year
- Queen’s Own Herald Lancir dies. His Companion, Taver, Chooses Healer Shavri to be the next Monarch’s Own. She becomes the first Herald-Healer in Valdemar history.
- One of Karse’s hired mages sends a flock of demons against some Hardorn civilians. When Vanyel turns them back onto Karse, Karse’s sentiments against mages and the Gifted are sparked.

- Herald-in-training Treven is being trained to be King. Treven is seventeen (17) and distant cousin to Herald Tantras.

- In the lawless territory north of Valdemar, multiple groups of bandits hired by “Master Dark” go out every day hunting for a Herald.

Two Weeks Later
- Vanyel and Stefen reach Valdemar’s last guardpost at the edge of unclaimed territory, having plowed through continual snowstorms, camping at the side of the road. The snowstorms didn’t have the earmarks of wizard weather, but when the Guardpost Captain remarks on the unusual snowfall, Vanyel realized that the storms were created and sent from the north.

The Next Day
- Vanyel and Stefen are ambushed by dozens of bandits. Stefen’s horse bucks him off and he flees the melee on foot until he drops from exhaustion. He is overwhelmed by guilt for abandoning Vanyel and heads back.

Late Afternoon
- Stefen reaches the ambush site and finds Yfandes’ motionless, tail-less body. There is no sign of Vanyel amongst the carnage. Stefen collapses with grief.

- A bespelled powder provided by Master Dark was used to block Vanyel’s powers. At Lord Rendan’s bandit lair, Vanyel is brutally beaten and then horrifically assaulted by the bandits. After they are through, Rendan realizes that Vanyel is nearly dead, and sends for a healer to keep him alive for Master Dark.

Past Sunset
- Old Man Brodie has the Healing Gift but his fears interfered with his training. He gave up and moved north out of Valdemar, and now treats only animals, using his Gift covertly, concealing it by also applying ordinary treatments. However, three years ago the bandits discovered his secret and blackmailed him, regularly requiring him to treat their combat injuries. Today when he returns from healing a colt, a bandit is waiting to fetch him.

- Brodie is outraged at Vanyel’s condition. In addition to the assault, he is bleeding internally in a dozen places. Rendan orders him to do whatever it takes, on penalty of death for failure.

- Stefen realizes that Vanyel may still be alive elsewhere. He notices that Yfandes’ tail stump is bleeding, which means she is still alive. He searches her body for something magical that is holding her unconscious.

A Candlemark Later
- Stefen finds a dart under Yfandes’ mane, tingling with magic. When he removes it, she jumps to her feet.

- Brodie discovers that Vanyel’s Healing Magic is keeping him alive. Vanyel’s vast storehouse of magic power is there for Brodie to use, but the spell blocking his Mage Gift is also blocking his Healing. Brodie finds that the spell is unbreakable from the inside, but clumsily constructed on the outside. He finds a point where it is giving Vanyel synesthesia, a physical connection that Brodie can reach. He gleefully sets to work to crack its’ shell, knowing this will allow Vanyel to free himself entirely.

- Yfandes takes charge of Stefen and they set out to rescue Vanyel.

- Vanyel prowls around inside his own mind, enraged. He periodically tests the confining spell, and at last it cracks. He breaks out in a wild fury, looking for any target.

Near Dawn
- Yfandes and Stefen find the bandits’ lair. As they look it over, flames burst out of the building in an explosion of Magic power. They rush in, and find many bodies burning, but others still alive. Stefen stops Vanyel from torturing the survivors. Vanyel is struck with guilt from the massacre, which included the innocent Healer. Yfandes and Stefen surround him with love, but know that the torment has broken him.

- They leave but don’t know where to go. They are approached by a kyree, Aroon, who was attracted by the magic. He offers them shelter with the Hot Springs Clan.

- They enter the kyrees’ cave complex in the foothills of the mountains where Vanyel had been heading. The kyree shaman Hyrryl cannot mindheal Vanyel but encourages Stefen to just give Vanyel his love.

- Vanyel’s emotional recovery takes time, but it is necessary so that he will not be weak against Master Dark.

- When he is ready to face the world again, he explains what he learned from probing Rendan’s mind. Master Dark has been operating a long time, since before Elspeth the Peacemaker was born. He wants Valdemar. For years he has been killing Herald-Mages and trainees from a distance, including children first manifesting their Mage Gift.
